Opera for the Young - 2017
January 30, 2017
Twelve fourth and fifth grade students from Wausaukee Elementary participated in the Madison-based Opera for the Young’s adaptation of Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love”. The performance held on January 18th at Wausaukee was viewed by the entire elementary school and parents and the public were invited. The students prepared for their opera debut with Mr. Brian Thell, Wausaukee vocal music director.
Opera for the Young’s adaptation takes place in Lonesome Gulch, a town in the American Old West. Miss Addy, Jimmy Reno, and Bill Corey form the love triangle of the story, with Dr. Dulcamara appearing as the "snake oil" peddler who sells the love potion (which is really just root beer). Students from each school perform on stage as the Justice of the Peace and the Soldier as well as the "Citizens of Lonesome Gulch".
The mission of Opera for the Young (OFY) is to ignite enthusiasm for opera by engaging and educating children about opera with professional, affordable school-based performances which includes Involving students in all aspects - from design to performance.
The Wausaukee School performance was sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Wausaukee School District, Boxtops and Labels for Schools donations, and a grant from the Wausaukee “Excellence in Education” Foundation.
