In a move to look towards the future, a group of teachers and community members in the Wausaukee School District has set up the Wausaukee School “Excellence in Education” Foundation. The Foundation’s primary purpose will be to benefit the academic programs for students that are usually the first things to be cut when school budgets cannot cover them, such as the creative and performing arts, world languages, and gifted/talented programs. The funds can also be used to enhance or extend other minimal academic offerings in the district, or to initiate innovative projects and programs.
“Wausaukee, even though it is a small, rural district, has quality programs to offer and in this era of No Child Left Behind our teachers and community members are looking to make sure that no programs are left behind,” stated Donna Pintarelli, Gifted/talented program coordinator. Pintarelli, along with Carol Wentzel - vocal music, Rosalie Widstrand – band, Jack Blohm - high school art, Lynda Caylor – elementary art, former French teacher Doris LaCourt, district teachers Carol Doberstein, Diane Holmes and community members Susan Thornton, Susanne Tuttle and Mike Gavigan were the initiating force behind the Foundation. The group recognizes the vital role that the targeted programs play in education and in becoming well-rounded, global citizens. Research has shown that those programs directly impact student academic success in many subject areas.
The Wausaukee Foundation has been set up as part of the greater M&M Area Community Foundation. Wausaukee Foundation committee members are Wentzel, Blohm, Widstrand, Gavigan, Tuttle, Pintarelli, and Rosie Figas, teacher and William LaChappel, district administrator. The Wausaukee group has been working closely with M&M Foundation former director Troy Durkee, current director Rick O’Farrell and board member Bruce Groulx to develop the contract between the two entities. Because the Wausaukee Foundation is part of the greater M&M Foundation, it helps benefit a wider range than just the local community. The M&M Foundation also provides the legal and financial expertise needed to manage a Foundation.
The initial goal of the Wausaukee Foundation is to reach $10,000 in donations over the next several weeks with the kick-off Founder’s Drive. Any donations will be gratefully received, but for those interested a Founder’s Drive plaque will list donors at increments of $100, $500 and $1,000. Gift cards can also be provided for anyone wishing to donate on behalf of someone else. All donations to the Foundation are tax-deductible, but checks must be made out to the Wausaukee School “Excellence in Education” Foundation with M&M Foundation written in the memo line. Donations can be sent to the school or directly to the M&M Foundation.
